CR-300 Wired LPR Corrosion Rate Sensor

CR-300 Wired LPR Corrosion Rate Sensor

Real-Time Corrosion Monitoring for Cooling and Process Water

The Pyxis CR-300 measures how fast the system’s metal is corroding, as it happens. It uses linear polarisation resistance (LPR) on a pair of test electrodes made from the metal of interest, and reports the general corrosion rate in mils per year (mpy; 1 mpy = 0.0254 mm per year).

It also measures electrochemical noise, which gives an index of localised corrosion (pitting). Both readings come out on 4–20 mA and RS-485 Modbus, so the sensor connects straight to a controller, PLC or DCS from a 24 V DC supply.

Signal Processed Inside the Sensor

The weak LPR signal is conditioned, amplified and digitised inside the sensor body, so long cable runs do not degrade it and no separate transmitter box is needed. The sensor also measures the water’s conductivity and corrects the corrosion reading for it, up to 10,000 µS/cm.

LPR Sensor or Corrosion Coupons?

A coupon shows the average corrosion over the weeks it was in the water. The CR-300 shows the corrosion rate now, so the effect of a change in treatment is seen within hours. The two readings follow each other but are not expected to match exactly; the LPR reading is best used for trends and day-to-day control.
