GRIFFCO Pulsation Dampeners
Smooth, Steady Flow from a Dosing Pump
A dosing pump delivers chemical in bursts, one per stroke. A pulsation dampener on the pump’s discharge smooths those bursts into a near-steady flow, so the line does not hammer, flow meters and gauges read properly, and dosing at the injection point is even.
Inside, a flexible diaphragm separates the chemical from a cushion of air or nitrogen. The gas absorbs each burst and pushes the liquid on between strokes. A gauge and charging valve on top show the gas charge and let it be topped up.
Sizes and Materials
Eleven standard sizes from about 100 mL to 5.2 L, with ½” to 2″ (DN 15 – DN 50) connections. Bodies in PVC, CPVC, polypropylene, PVDF and Noryl® (to 10 bar), or 316 stainless steel, Alloy 20 and Hastelloy C for higher pressures. The diaphragm is EPDM as standard, with Viton®, Hypalon® or PTFE to suit the chemical.
Inlet Stabilisers
The same design, fitted on the pump’s suction side, helps the pump fill fully on every stroke where there is a suction lift, a long suction line or a high flooded head. Ask CHEMTROL® for details.

Installation
- Fit on the discharge side, as close to the pump as possible (within 10 pipe diameters), after the pressure relief valve.
- Mount vertically where possible, with an isolation valve so the diaphragm can be changed without draining the line.
- Do not screw metal pipe into a plastic dampener.
- A back pressure valve downstream keeps at least 0.5 – 0.7 bar on the line, which the dampener needs to work well.
Charging
- Install the dampener first, then charge it, then pressurise the system.
- Charge the gas side to about 80% of the line pressure.
- Use compressed air up to 10 bar, dry nitrogen above that. Never use oxygen.
- Fine-tune until the gauge needle is steadiest, and check the joints for leaks with soapy water.
Applications
- Discharge of diaphragm and piston dosing pumps: chlorine, coagulants, acids, caustic and pH correction
- Water and wastewater treatment, process water and cooling towers
- Long discharge lines, and lines with flow meters or gauges
- Used with a back pressure valve, pressure relief valve and calibration column
