Programmable Super Chlorination
Why Programmable Super-Chlorination Matters
Programmable Super-Chlorination (Shock Treatment) also refers to chemical booster treatment using an elevated level of oxidizer. This process should be performed periodically to prevent the accumulation of harmful compounds (such as chloramines) and biological contaminants (like algae).
Even with proper chlorine residuals maintained through chemical automation, periodic shock treatment is strongly recommended for the following reasons:
-
To prevent algae growth caused by the genetic adaptation of certain algae species, which can become resistant to normal chlorine levels.
-
If chlorine levels drop below the recommended range — even briefly due to chemical depletion or technical faults — chloramines can form. These compounds can only be effectively removed through break-point super-chlorination.
Shock Treatment vs Booster Program
🔹 Shock Treatment
The Shock Treatment program increases the level of oxidizer or sanitizer in the water to eliminate harmful elements—such as chloramines, germs, and algae—that may become resistant to normal chemical levels.
🔹 Booster Program
The Booster program schedules a delayed, one-time chemical feed—typically during the night or weekends. It operates independently of other control modes.
Shock Treatment Sub-menu
The Shock Treatment Sub-menu allows the operator to set the program to OFF, ON, or AUTO.
-
When set to ON, the Shock Treatment program begins immediately.
-
When set to AUTO, the operator specifies the start date, treatment frequency (in weeks), start and stop times, and the target level—measured in mV for standard Shock Treatment or in ppm/mg/L for Super-chlorination.
Chemical injection will stop automatically when the desired level is reached or when the stop time is reached—whichever comes first.
Booster treatment program
The Booster program is designed to schedule a delayed, one-time chemical feed, such as dosing an oxidizing biocide at 1:00 AM for one hour. It operates independently of other control modes.
The Booster Sub-menu allows the operator to set the date, start time, and duration of the feed event.
Warning
If the concentration of chloramines is 0.2 PPM (mg/L) or higher, a super-chlorination level equal to 10 times the combined chlorine level is recommended.
The Shock Treatment program can be configured via the ORP Menu or the SANITIZER Menu, depending on the chemical used.
The weekly cycle, along with the start date and time, should be set according to the specific needs and usage patterns of the facility.
Precautions
During super-chlorination, the Time Limit safety feature is bypassed.
A SHOCK TREATMENT warning will appear on the display screen when the program is active.
Out-of-range alarms will remain triggered as long as oxidizer or sanitizer levels exceed the high-limit thresholds.
