What Is Makeup Water Level Control?

In commercial pools, spas, and water features, water is constantly lost through evaporation, splash-out, filter backwashing, and cleaning activities. To keep systems running properly, water must be regularly replenished — this is known as makeup water.

Manual top-ups can be time-consuming, error-prone, and inefficient. That’s why Chemtrol controllers include automated makeup water level control.

How It Works

The controller constantly monitors the water level using level sensors (or float switches). When it detects that the water level has dropped below a predefined setpoint:

  1. It opens a solenoid fill valve or a motorized valve to allow fresh water in.
  2. The system continues filling until the water returns to the correct level.
  3. If the water level isn’t restored within a preset timeframe, the controller will:
  •  Stop the fill cycle to prevent overflow or flooding
  •  Trigger an alert or alarm for operators to investigate

This automatic fill process can happen multiple times per day, without requiring any manual input.
