Super Chlorination
Shock Treatment Automation
CHEMTROL® programmable controllers support automated shock treatment (also known as super-chlorination), helping maintain optimal water hygiene. Even when consistent chlorine residuals are maintained through chemical automation, periodic shock dosing is recommended to prevent algae growth caused by chlorine-resistant microorganisms and to eliminate chloramines that may form during temporary chlorine level drops.
The shock treatment function can be easily configured via the SANITIZER and/or ORP menus using daily or weekly scheduling. During this process, safety timers and warning indicators are activated to ensure system protection and user awareness. This feature offers peace of mind while maintaining superior water quality with minimal manual intervention.
Shock treatment program
The Shock Treatment sub-menu allows the operator to set the program to OFF, ON, or AUTO. When set to ON, the shock treatment starts immediately. In AUTO mode, the operator can select the start date of the first treatment, the repeat cycle in weeks, the start and stop times, and the desired shock level — measured in mV for ORP-based shock treatment or in ppm/mg/L for super-chlorination.
Chemical injection will stop either when the target level is reached or when the stop time occurs, whichever comes first.
Warning
If the concentration of chloramines reaches 0.2 PPM (mg/L) or higher, a super-chlorination level equal to 10 times the combined chlorine level is required.
The shock treatment program can be configured through either the ORP Menu or the SANITIZER Menu, depending on the type of chemical used.
Select the weekly cycle, start date, and time based on the facility’s specific requirements and usage schedule.
Precautions
- During super-chlorination, the Time Limit Safety is bypassed.
- A SHOCK TREATMENT warning will appear on the display screen when the program is active.
- Out-of-range alarms will remain active as long as the oxidizer or sanitizer levels exceed the high limit thresholds.
